Abstract
This article explores the life and work of Gust Bartman, a respected Yup'ik elder from Alaska. Bartman is known for his dedication to preserving the Yup'ik language and cultural heritage. Beyond his cultural work, he was a professional boxer, demonstrating resilience and strength both in and out of the ring. He has been a vocal advocate against alcohol and substance abuse in Alaska Native communities, emphasizing the importance of sobriety for health and cultural survival. Through teaching and storytelling, Bartman has helped pass down traditional knowledge and cultural values to younger generations. His efforts reflect a deep commitment to cultural pride and community well-being, making him an influential figure in Yup'ik society.
