Abstract
This article explores consciousness-related themes in Minoan archaeology from a cross-cultural perspective, focusing on gender constructs and their influence on societal organization. Through a preliminary analysis of Bronze Age archaeological evidence from Crete, the author—an Asian art historian—investigates signs of a yin-feminine consciousness that prioritized egalitarian values and reverence for the Earth. The study contrasts the peaceful and inclusive characteristics of Minoan society with the more hierarchical and masculine-dominated structures typical of other ancient civilizations. Drawing comparisons with parallel Bronze Age cultures, the article challenges conventional interpretations of Minoan civilization and calls into question the continued use of the term “Minoan” for the pre-Conquest era. It suggests that rethinking gender roles and cultural narratives in ancient archaeology can offer deeper insights into the values and consciousness of early societies.
