Abstract
This article critically analyzes the impact of wildlife conservation on local communities in Tanzania, with a focus on the Maasai people. It challenges the effectiveness of Community Based Wildlife Management (CBWM) programs, arguing that such initiatives often fail to deliver meaningful benefits to Indigenous populations. By examining the historical and socio-political context of conservation in Tanzania, the paper reveals the disconnect between policy narratives and on-the-ground realities. It explores how conservation efforts have sometimes marginalized local communities and contributed to socio-economic inequalities. The study calls for a rethinking of conservation strategies, advocating for approaches that balance wildlife protection with community needs and rights. Ultimately, the article proposes alternative solutions to the current conservation crisis, emphasizing inclusive participation, equitable resource sharing, and respect for Indigenous knowledge and livelihoods.
