Abstract
The author reflects on personal experiences with language suppression and the consequent decline in the use of Yup’ik within her family. She discusses the absence of Yup’ik language exposure during her upbringing and the inspiration behind creating a Yup’ik Spelling Bee for Beginners as a tool for language revitalization. The article explores the numerous challenges faced in preserving Indigenous languages, such as limited educational resources, declining native speakers, and low engagement from non-native communities. Through candid personal narratives and broader observations, the author highlights the urgent need for proactive and creative strategies to revive and promote Indigenous languages. Emphasizing community involvement and cultural pride, the article advocates for sustainable efforts to ensure the survival and flourishing of Yup’ik language and identity for future generations.
