Abstract

This article examines the historical land alienation, struggles, and economic challenges faced by the Maasai pastoralists in Kenya and Tanzania. It explores how European colonization and post-independence government policies have exacerbated conflicts over land and water resources. The Maasai have experienced significant land dispossession, marginalization, and socio-economic disparities, resulting in poverty and displacement. The article highlights the impacts of colonial interventions, nationalization efforts, and complex land ownership disputes on the Maasai community. It underscores the urgent need for fair land tenure policies and the recognition of Indigenous rights to address these long-standing issues. The study also considers the broader effects of wildlife conservation and state policies on Maasai livelihoods.
